Stone, Ring of Brodgar

Welcome back. The second part of Standing Stones. We will explore the Ring of Brodgar - part of the many wonderful Neolithic sites on the Orkney's, just North of Scotland proper.

Again, our guide was Jean ROSS - Great Orkney Tours (www.greatorkneytours.co.uk) or (www.visitscotland.com). I do highly recommend Jean, especially if your time in the Orkney's is short and you want to get the most out of your visit.

To learn more about the Ring of Brodgar, click over to Visit Orkney dot Com (www.visitorkney.com/things/history/ring-of-brodgar). I am here to absorb the experience, the history, the sights and the sounds.....and to snap a bunch of great photos.

We spent about 20 minutes exploring the Ring of Brodgar and captured a number of great photos. It was very interesting to learn one of the stones had been struck by lightning and a large portion of the stone sheared off. That is the most damage these stones have received in the last 3000 years, not counting the stones that have toppled over.

The Ring of Brodgar consists of 60 stones, about half are still standing. The area has a healthy growth of Heather, which was in bloom during our visit. Nice contrasts, greens, purples and greys.
And, the blue skies really made everything standout.

We had a great day on Orkney. Great personal guide, thank you Jean. Great weather. Great food.....did I forget to mention we had lunch at The Orkney Brewery (www.orkneybrewery.co.uk). My bad. Lunch was also great. The school house motif was very creative. My beer sampler 3 x 1/3rd pints, was delivered  in a special paddle, hollowed out to hold the three glasses. Since, I was not driving it was awesome getting to sample the local fare. What did I sample you may ask?? 3 Sisters Scottish Ale (4.2%), Raven Ale (3.8%) and Red MacGregor (4.0%). They were all fine beverages, I am not sure I could pick a favourite. My suggestion, try them all.

Till next time.....grab you camera and capture the World!!

Mountainman.
